Lowering payload / message size when character space is sparse

I need to send a code where characters are limited (such as in a text message or QR code). I am only concerned that the code is not guessable and that the payload was sent from us. (data authenticity / integrity). It does not matter if the payload (a number) is exposed to the recipient.::Listen

I need to send a code where characters are limited (such as in a text message or QR code). I am only concerned that the code is not guessable and that the payload was sent from us. (data authenticity / integrity). It does not matter if the payload (a number) is exposed to the recipient.

My first thought was just to use a hashing algorithm like SHA256 and I’ve tried a few symmetrical ciphers such as 256-aes-gcm (iv 12 bytes, auth tag 16) but they run quite long (32 bytes). Any suggestions to half this or am I at the limit? I’ve thought of lowering the parameters or doing a partial hash lookup but I’m unsure of the implications. Thanks for any advice. Cheers!
